Many books have been written about Empires, especially the fall of the Roman Empire. The seminal title is The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, in six volumes, by Edward Gibbon, published between 1776-1789. It covers the period from 98AD to 1590. In total, the Roman Republic, Empire, and Byzantium (fall of Constantinople in 1453) lasted 2206 years. Leo Tolstoy (War and Peace, 1833-1869) and Carl von Clausewitz (Prussian military theorist, 1833) felt that historical events and the duration of empires are a result of time cycles.

“Eurasia is the world’s axial supercontinent. A power that dominated Eurasia would exercise decisive influence over two of the world’s three most economically productive regions, Western Europe and East Asia. … a country dominant in Eurasia would almost automatically control the Middle East and Africa.”

Zbigniew Brzezinski
Foreign Affairs, 1997
